Western Golf Cart Manual

My boys are getting older now and I can’t carry their clubs, but they still play golf with me regularly, my oldest son is a scratch golfer and the youngest is coming along nicely. They’re both very competitive and know how to get my attention when I’m not focused.

Because of the aforementioned cart, I was one of the few women not riding a cart and I’d often caddy with a male friend. My father, who was a pretty good golfer, was one of those always riding a cart. He said, “Sometimes you find out who the real man is when you’re a caddie.”

The next year, Ben Hogan, then a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team, went to the British Open as a professional caddie. It was the first time any American had caddied in a British Open and during a practice round he and a group of friends rode on a cart. Hogan, however, would be the first American to win the British Open.

I try not to get involved in too many details of the game. If I play well, I’ll yell to my boys, “Good job,” and then I’ll go back to the cart or to tee off. I know how fast my boys can swing a club—but I don’t want to know how far.

But time passed and the crowds dwindled. Tanglewood had a new executive director, Richard Eyles, a former British Open champ who'd turned Tanglewood into a place where the players came for the golf.

There is something about the quality of the golf at Tanglewood, though. It is a little rough, which seems to suit my temperament. I also love the old-fashioned clubhouse, the history of the place, and the challenges of the course. The good thing is that I don’t think I’ll ever have a chance to play there because it is, for many years, the only course in the U.S. that I could never afford to play, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

The first major golf tournament was at St. Andrews , Scotland in September of 1844. It was a match between two members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, with each player hitting a ball into a hole on the first tee. The idea was that the best player would win.

World Cup golf tournaments were not played in Europe until 1966. The film , however, captures a lot of the craziness of the U.S. television coverage of the event. Incidentally, the movie was filmed on the same G&E Ranch where President Tommy's father learned to play golf from the family's black cook, George . She would use the stove to make the balls for him to practice.
