During a camping trip with his family, a sudden mist envelops Scott, causing the surrounding trees and bushes to grow into gigantic proportions, and from there the mist grows into his clothes. A frightened Scott kicks off his shoes and runs into the woods, where he encounters a giant slug the size of a large dog, which Scott kills with a rock. Scott then notices his clothes have shrunk in size too. He is touched by his grandfather's letter of encouragement to him to persevere in the face of adversity.
A quarantine experiment brings Scott to a government research institute in Washington, where he is exposed to a chemical hallucinogen. Scott hallucinates he is on the surface of the moon and walks toward the light on the horizon. He is scolded by a man in a white hat who informs him that he has 24 hours to return to the institute or he will be returned to Earth, where an infection could be transmitted. Scott materializes in a cell and escapes from its uncanny construction. After breaking into the next neighboring cell the same fate awaits him -- who will come for him? Scott enjoys freedom in the cell and enjoys the moonlight and time to reflect.
Scott runs across fields of crops stretching in all directions. From the windows at the institute, Scott observes the fields unnaturally tapering to the horizon and rains fall as if from the sky.
After seeing the lovely Louise jump to her death for him, Scott becomes depressed. A doctor removes the chemical from his body and suggests he be deported back to the surface. He needs to return to the institute to retrieve an inoculation, and he reluctantly agrees. Scott returns to the cell with his skin still in its luminous blue glow and fills it with a hallucinogen of his own devising. In his dream he is given a cure for his shrinking. He finds the long-missing Eleanor Powell and courteously follows her into a mysterious stone house. The doctor intervenes in Scott's dream, and he awakens to find Scott larger and with a light skin tone. d2c66b5586
