The seven samurai are easily the stars of this film. Director Kurosawa wisely knew that it's the characters and not the actors that make the movie. Take Kikuchiyo, for example. He's a great comedic character, but he's almost overshadowed by his two male friends. As much as the audience loves Kikuchiyo, we care less about the other characters.
