On a purely musical level, Peter Frampton is not a particularly satisfying musician. But the guy can sing. Hard to argue that. He is a pop star of some sort. He was signed to MCA Records, and played guitar as if he was a keyboard player (and took an obvious stab at Michael Jackson right from the start). He played with the Credibility Gap before they became more into punk rock, and apparently would have played with the Ramones, but they were Satanist. He did play with the Police before Sting became a dork. He was the lead singer for the Saints and Tommy Shaw’s band, The Motions. He played on Saturday Night Live in 1986. He does a lot of stuff (including one of the greatest epics of all time in his live version of Jimi Hendrix’s "Bold as Love"). But he is no one’s current favorite (at least I’m not aware of it).
In the first person from the '70s, Frampton often seems like he's making a very personal statement about who he has become through the lens of music, but his dual personas are part of what makes him appealing; he is the alter-ego/lead singer/Voodoo Pop Priest as well as the Pete Frampton who appeals to the mainstream in between his two identities. The idea that he is playing himself offstage is obscured by the fact that we are listening to Peter Frampton and not Pete Frampton. - Mick Wall d2c66b5586
