Any source of CO2 released into the air should be avoided, since this may contribute to an increase in the CO2 concentration. In addition, open doors between nursery and sleeping rooms should be avoided. These rooms should be located at an altitude lower than that of the living area of the building and the air changes should be performed more frequently in the winter.
Indoor air quality and CO2 concentrations increased with time in the playroom. This is due to a marked increase in the CO2 concentration. Once the CO2 concentration exceeds the recommended limit of 1000 ppm, the room should be aired. Although CO2 concentrations in the breathing zone of the child decreased in the first 30 minutes of exposure, they increased to or exceeded the recommended limit of 1000 ppm after four hours of exposure in the playroom. This is due to the increased CO2 concentration and the relatively higher amount of time spent in the room.
Indoor air quality and CO2 concentrations were significantly lower in the playroom as compared to the sleeping room. This applies to the average levels and time of each period, with a significant difference between the two rooms (Table 2). The study also shows that the presence of young children (presumably, toddlers) in the nursery for four hours before the start of the period, and for the rest of the day and the night, is likely to cause a significant and prolonged increase in the CO2 concentration in the playroom, which may eventually cause the CO2 concentration in the room to exceed the recommended limit (Basiska et al., 2019).
