Current software is bundled with a type of serial port on the control. For example, many FANUC CNC controls come with an RS-232 serial port, while the FANUC C250E has an HSSB port. In order to communicate to a number of devices, the Ethernet connection is a multi-port connection, where each port is wired to a different device. For example, suppose that you have a control and a PC connected to the same Ethernet switch, then each port on the switch will be wired to either the control or the PC. To further illustrate, say that the two Ethernet ports on the switch are wired to the control, and that the PC is also connected to the Ethernet switch. In this case, each device (control and PC) has its own Ethernet port and the control can communicate with the PC via either port.
