Cassius: 15 Again - A Review
Cassius is a French electronic duo composed of Phillippe Zdar and Boombass, who have been making music since the late 90s. Hailed as one of the pioneers of \"La French Touch\", their resurgence album, named 15 Again, claiming their influence was the sound of the music they enjoyed as teenagers. This album as a follow-up to the fairly decent \"Au-Reve\" album from 2004 is a major disappointment.
The album was written and produced by Cassius and was recorded in three weeks in Ibiza. It includes a collaboration with hip hop producer and performer Pharrell Williams. Other collaborators include SÃbastien Tellier, -M-, Etienne de CrÃcy and Le Knight Club (electronic duo composed of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Eric Chedeville).
The album starts with \"Toop Toop\", a catchy and funky track that features Zdar's vocals and -M-'s guitar. This is one of the few highlights of the album, as it showcases Cassius' ability to create groovy and infectious beats. The next track, \"Rock Number One\", is a bland and generic electro-pop song that features Gladys Gambie's vocals. The lyrics are clichÃd and uninspired, and the music is repetitive and boring.
The rest of the album follows a similar pattern: mediocre songs that lack originality and creativity. \"This Song\" is a dull ballad that tries to be emotional but fails miserably. \"15 Again\" is a cheesy and childish song that features Etienne de CrÃcy's drum machine and synthesizer. \"All I Want\" is a boring and forgettable song that features Boom, Gee and Zee's vocals. \"Eye Water\" is a wasted opportunity to collaborate with Pharrell Williams, as the song is bland and soulless.
The only other decent track on the album is \"See Me Now\", which features Le Knight Club's production. The song has a nice disco vibe and a catchy chorus. However, it is not enough to save the album from being a flop. The album ends with \"Cria Cuervos\", a slow and boring instrumental track that adds nothing to the album.
Cassius' 15 Again is a disappointing album that fails to live up to their previous works. The album lacks originality, creativity and energy. The songs are bland, generic and boring. The collaborations are wasted and uninteresting. The album sounds like a cheap imitation of their teenage influences, rather than a homage or a tribute. Cassius should have stayed true to their roots and their style, rather than trying to be something they are not.
