The present volume offers an overview of the history of anatomy in Europe from the 14th century onward. The history of anatomy has been the subject of a number of systematic studies, among which the following are worth mentioning:
The History of Anatomy, edited by C.M. Bayers and D.A. Auchter (Cambridge University Press, 1989) discusses anatomy in terms of its history and the history of anatomy. The text provides an overview of the history of anatomy from the 14th century until the 19th century, drawing on the documents of the various collections of anatomical theatre, various treatises and writings, and other relevant sources. The authors present the development of anatomical theatre from its conception in medieval universities, its deployment in the early modern university, and its later decline in medical education.
Anatomy in the Enlightenment, edited by H.A. Kenyon (Duckworth, 1985) discusses anatomy during the late 16th and 17th centuries. The book considers the place of anatomy in early modern medicine, in particular, as a means of distinguishing curable from incurable illnesses and for the development of natural philosophy. The book also considers the place of anatomy in the training of surgeons and physicians.
